Students for Learning
"Originally known as the Garneau Tutoring Program and founded in early 2006, Students for Learning is a University of Alberta Student Group that focuses on enhancing the quality of education throughout the community. We believe that the best way to tackle weaknesses is at the very beginning of an individuals' academic career: elementary school. Our group recruits volunteer tutors from the university and pairs them up with one child throughout the year. The two then work together throughout the year tackling the academic weaknesses of the child. We also hold sessions and seminars in which we tutor high school students. Currently, our group operates within two elementary schools, and we also hold sessions and seminars in which we tutor high school students in various subjects.
Aside from studying and books, many other factors also play an important role in a child's education. Proper nourishment, warm clothes, and other such priveleges often affect a student's ability to learn. Thus our group also fundraises throughout the year to fund various programs for inner city students, ensuring that these children can also have access to all these benefits."
