Heart of the City Music Program

The Heart of the City Music Program is a not-for-profit student group at the University of Alberta that provides free music lessons to at-risk children and youth in Edmonton who would otherwise not be able to afford them. Our program currently operates in 11 elementary schools throughout the city as well as at the Norwood Child & Family Resource Centre and reaches over 100 inner city children and youth each year. Volunteers are post-secondary students or community members who provide one-on-one piano lessons to students in inner city schools at no charge. The HCPP provides a way for members of the community to share their love of music with children who would otherwise not have the opportunity to learn how to play the piano. When children realize that they are capable of creating music, the whole world opens up to them and realize they are capable of accomplishing whatever they set their minds to.
